Libraries as organisations, were dealing with documents alone for many years and are now dealing with "information" contained in the documents. The present information society is transforming gradually into a knowledge society and we, as librarians, have a significant role to play in managing knowledge. The paper attempts to trace the evolution of the concept of Knowledge Management (KM) and identify the role of librarians in KM functions. It also attempts to compare the Laws of Library Science and the Management principles of Fayol with Davenport's KM principles. In conclusion, it is felt that KM concept is not so new to librarians and for librarians to transform themselves into knowledge managers, they need to acquire some more IT and management skills.Keywords

A survey of scientometric literature of India for the period 2000-12 was carried out to study and understand scientometric research in India. The data were collected from LISA; 175 documents are covered in this survey. most of which were published in Annals of Library and Information Science, SRELS Journal of Information Management, DESIDOC Bulletin of Information Technology, COLLNET Journal of Scientometrics and Information management and Journal of Scientometrics. Discussions in the reviewed papers relate to several topics in scientometrics -- India's contribution to world literature, growth of Indian literature, proportion of collaborative research, etc. This review indicates that the Indian publications are now visible and it is increasing, There is hardly any research being done to evaluate and measure research outcome; there is also no evidence that the results of the scientometric research is being used in drafting science policy or in science administration.Keywords

Two approaches to semi-mechanical method of generating a thesaurus based on a scheme for classification and faceted subject structuring respectively, are mentioned. The problems in identifying non-hierarchical associative relationships (NHR) among ideas are indicated. About thirty types of NHR, taken from different sources are enumerated. The representation of NHRs between component ideas of subjects as facet relation (FR), spectator relation (SpR), Coordinate relation (CR) and Phase relation (PR) according to S R Ranganathan's model for structuring of subject is illustrated with examples. This study is based on circulation data collected from six Canadian University Libraries which have automated circulation systems. It reveals that the frequency distributions of transactions over both users and documents are reverse-J shaped, highly positively skewed, and have a long tail. An analysis of the circulation data indicates that (1) the mean of the distribution is neither equal to the variance nor equal to the standard deviation of the distribution, (2) the variance of the distribution is a non-linear function of the mean of the distribution, and (3) a low percentage of the users in the university libraries make maximum use of circulation service and equal percentage of documents circulated are borrowed frequently.
In an attempt to describe and identify a probability distribution of transactions over documents and also over users, it has been observed that most size-frequency data of transactions follow a negative binomial distribution. This is the only distribution which fits at least 45% of the empirical distributions at the 0.01 significance level. It was, however, observed that in the majority of the cases, this distribution does not fit the data relating to document distributions, from undergraduate populations. Various probability distributions, namely (1) Poisson, (2) Truncated Poisson (3) Negative binomial, (4) Truncated negative binomial, (5) Geometric, (6) Logarithmic series, (7) Borel-Tanner, (8) Cumulative advantage, (9) Waring, (10) Weibull-discrete and continuous, (11) Zeta, (12) Pearson curves (13) Johnson curves, (14) Pareto, (15) Logistic, (16) Sinh transformation of the variable, and (17) Bradford 'were tried in order to identify the probability density function which can be used to characterise the distribution of transactions. A discrete Weibull distribution using the Napier constant is also defined for the purpose of fitting the empirical data. On the basis of empirical evidence, it is argued that the phenomenon of distribution of transactions is a manifestation of the "success-breeds-success" phenomenon. A few applications of the study are discussed.

Application of quantitative techniques to library and bibliographical work was known as Statistical Bibliography. As early as 1948, Dr. S.R. Ranganathan suggested at the Aslib Conference in Lemington Spa, that it was necessary for Librarians to develop librametry on the lines of bibliometry, econometry and psychometry since many of the matter connected with library work and services involved large numbers. Despite his attempts to define the scope of librametry, the field did not develop until early 1970s. Since 1969, the subject has come to be known as Bibliometrics. The scope and definition of bibliometrics suggest that it may be defined as quantitative treatment of properties of recorded discourse and behaviour pertaining to it.- Features of Library Automation Software:A Comparative Study
